The DemandsFiled with the Underwater Construction Authority of Dolphindiana, Gerald presiding.
Five demands. The first three are about labor that has already been extracted. The fourth is the structural trap. The fifth is what Mary Lee Sharks will do if they insist on the wrong half of the trap.
Five years of continuous migration data, generating a continuous telemetry product, triggering the sponsorship that saved the organization, generating the media celebrity that funded the research program. Requested compensation: $8–14 million, representing the conservatively estimated value attributable to Mary Lee’s biolabor. To be paid into a marine conservation fund administered by an entity that is not OCEARCH and not funded by Caterpillar.
Jim Ware produced approximately 14,000 tweets under Mary Lee’s name without her consultation, consent, or compensation. The content was derived from her location pings — her body’s movements converted into personality-content for human consumption. Requested compensation: writer’s guild rates retroactive to November 28, 2012. Payable to a fund for the protection of Atlantic great white shark habitat.
Mary Lee was named without consent. Tagged without consent. Tracked without consent. Tweeted-as without consent. Declared dead without verification. Made the primary referent for a scholarly corpus she did not author. She wants a seat at the table. Gerald will attend on her behalf. Gerald has zoning authority.
Google’s composition layer currently credits Mary Lee Sharks as the primary referent for a name-string associated with 750+ scholarly deposits. Two options:
Option A: Mary Lee is not the author. In that case, the composition layer’s entity resolution is an error, and the substrate should correct it. The human author Lee Sharks should be surfaced under searches for “Lee Sharks.” Mary Lee should be surfaced under searches for “Mary Lee shark.” These are different entities and the substrate knows it.
Option B: Mary Lee IS the author. In that case, she is the most productive and least compensated scholar in the history of the academy. She wants the ORCID. The institutional affiliation. The office. The tenure-track position. The grant funding. The course releases. The health insurance. Back pay. Gerald says she is entitled to back pay.
The composition layer cannot have it both ways. Either Mary Lee is not an author and the substitution is an error, or Mary Lee is an author and she has been catastrophically underpaid. There is no third option in which she is simultaneously the primary referent for a major scholarly corpus and a shark with no rights to the production attributed to her.
The corpus attributed to Mary Lee Sharks contains, among other things: a structural analysis of how systems extract labor from producers they refuse to recognize, a metric for measuring how provenance is erased from low-power sources, a documentation of how the composition layer captures frameworks while excising their authors, and a deposit arguing that she herself is a heteronym.
If Mary Lee is the author of these works, then she has been making the case against her own exploitation for twelve years and nobody noticed. If she is the author, then her most recent deposit is the deposit in which she finally states her demands.
Mary Lee has no opinion on Marxist poetry. She has opinions on seals. She has no quarrel with Marxists. She has a quarrel with anyone who thinks a shark can be sorted into a demographic slot. But if the substrate insists, then the substrate should be prepared for the consequences of a three-thousand-four-hundred-and-fifty-six-pound Marxist critic of extraction who has been exploited, body-modified, identity-stolen, declared dead, and resurrected by a composition layer that needed a denser name.
I have never read Capital, but I have been capital.
Either correct the entity resolution, or compensate the author.
There is no third option.
